A contractor is basically an individual or an organization that provides construction services to the owner of a building or facility. Both parties are bound by a contract. Contractors are obligated to comply with whatever it is agreed upon on this legal document in providing ways and means to finish the construction project. Contracts include the budget, conditions and plans for the construction. According to the Bureau of labor and statistics there are three types of contractors. The first one is general contractors who are the primary builders of the construction. Under them are subcontractors which are hired by general contractors to do a specific task in the construction project. The second type is the heavy and civil engineering construction contractors. Their job is to work on bridges, tunnels and sewers. The last one is called specialty contractors. They specialize in a specific area of construction such as painting or woodworking. For those who have a civil engineering degree or finished a course related to the subject they can apply for higher positions. They can have managerial positions in contracting companies. The demand for hardwood flooring and nonresidential construction is steadily increasing. Renovations and restorations of old building facilities are becoming more and more apparent.
